Overview
We partnered with food writer Jess Elliott to create a visually rich short film capturing her connection to food, place, and storytelling. Filmed on location in Edinburgh, we explored the local spaces that shape her culinary voice — from her garden to her kitchen workspace. This was a creative-led production with a focus on natural light, texture, and authenticity, allowing Jess’s passion and philosophy to guide the visual narrative.

The story
This film captures the quiet, considered world of Jess Elliott — a food writer based in Edinburgh whose work explores the deeper connections between food, place, and memory. Shot in and around her kitchen studio, the film offers a glimpse into the rhythm of her creative process: from thoughtful ingredient prep to moments of writing, reflection, and experimentation. Jess’s space is more than a kitchen — it’s a studio for storytelling, where dishes are developed with intention and ideas are simmered over time. Through warm visuals and a calm, observational tone, the film invites viewers into a slower, more sensory relationship with food.

The details
We approached the shoot with a documentary sensibility, aiming to quietly observe rather than stage Jess’s world. Natural light was a key part of the visual language — we timed the shoot to make the most of Edinburgh’s shifting daylight, using it to create a soft, honest atmosphere that echoed the tone of her work. The camera stayed handheld and close, allowing us to move intuitively through the space and capture moments as they unfolded — from slow preparations at the stove to quiet writing at her desk. This minimal, observational setup let the environment breathe and gave the film a feeling of intimacy, grounded in real time and real textures.
